Ultra-Long-Haul Raman Network for Utility Company - LATAM
At a Glance
Location: LATAM
Industry: Utility Company / Critical Infrastructure
Customer: Electricity Company
Network Type: Ultra Long-Haul Raman Backbone

Background
A primary electricity provider in the LATAM region required a high-capacity optical backbone to interconnect critical operational sites and enable future scalability. The network needed to transport multiple high-capacity ultra-long spans without intermediate amplification points, ensuring secure, reliable, and low-latency transmission across challenging fiber routes.
PacketLight was selected to design and deliver a turnkey DWDM/OTN solution leveraging advanced Raman amplification to extend reach and maintain OSNR across long-haul fiber segments.
Business Challenge
The provider required a resilient network to build their ultra-long-haul point-to-point network:
- Amplification – there were no intermediate amplification sites along critical spans, requiring high-gain, distributed amplification.
- Ultra-long-haul – high performance demands and add/drop service connections.
- Fiber attenuation sensitivity - requiring careful optical design and route engineering.
- Scalability – future-proof for increased service count, including 200G and beyond.
- Resilience – mission-critical infrastructure with minimal maintenance burden.
Network Scope
- 1,500 km of national-scale backbone connecting operational hubs.
- Point-to-point and add/drop capabilities across multiple service sites.
- Spans engineered to exceed traditional EDFA-only reach using counter-propagating Raman amplification for up to an additional 12dB gain with negative noise figure.
Deployed Devices
- PL-2000T 800G | 4 x 200G – Multi-service 200G transponders with integrated OTN functionality, transporting Native Ethernet (10GbE/100GbE) and OTN services.
- PL-1000R Raman– High-gain amplifiers, with optional hybrid EDFA-Raman configurations for maximum span reach.
Deployment Highlights
- Custom optical design by PacketLight’s engineering team to solve fiber loss, attenuation, and span length.
- Secure, low-latency transport for utility SCADA and corporate applications.
- Transport of multiple 200G wavelengths.
- Fully redundant power and path design to ensure operational continuity.
- Delivered on time with turnkey installation, testing, and commissioning.
Key Features
- Distributed Raman gain: Utilizing the transmission fiber to extend reach without regeneration.
- Low OSNR preservation: Supporting high-capacity coherent wavelengths up to 800G.
- Plug-and-play modular design: Enables rapid deployment and future growth.
- Centralized NMS control: Real-time visibility, fault isolation, and SLA assurance.
Results
PacketLight delivered a resilient, high-capacity optical backbone tailored for a national utility’s unique long-haul requirements. By combining advanced Raman amplification with PL-2000Ts multi-service transponders, EDC now operates a backbone capable of supporting current operational needs and scaling for future high-bandwidth services, without vendor lock-in or excessive infrastructure costs.
