Long Laul DWDM Network with Protection

2100 km DWDM network deployed in just two weeks

At a Glance

Company: ElCat
Location: Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan
Industry: Telecom, Triple Play Service Provider

Challenge: ElCat was looking for fast deployment of a 10G-based network in tough geographical conditions, while setting a foundation for future gradual expansion, using 10G and 100G channels.

Solution: Within two weeks, PacketLight’s 10G DWDM OTN transponder was deployed in over 2000 kilometers of network. This set a good basis for future simple and gradual expansion.

Success: The solution provided ElCat with the most modern and protected network in Kyrgyzstan and allowed them to offer connectivity to their local and international customers.

Background

ElCat is one of the leading telecom operators in Kyrgyzstan, providing triple play services to domestic customers, and data services to their partners in neighboring countries. ElCat is considered a pioneer of Internet services in the Kyrgyz market due to their constant development and deployment of new data services.

As part of their development, ElCat decided to deploy a new DWDM-based optical transport network (OTN) to increase capacity and reach of their existing networks.

ElCat’s objective for the project was to build a cross-country DWDM network to upgrade their existing SDH network capacity as well as expand reach to provide services to their partners in neighboring countries.

In addition, in the fast growing data transport market of Kyrgyzstan, ElCat needed to differentiate from the competition by providing their customers with the most advanced and reliable long haul transport network.

The Challenge

ElCat was looking to promptly deploy a 10G-based network, while setting a foundation for future simple and cost-effective gradual expansion, using 10G and 100G channels.

Due to the very tough geographical conditions in Kyrgyzstan and limited access to remote locations during the winter, ElCat needed reliable equipment with low power consumption, and easy installation and maintenance. In addition, to further reduce CAPEX and OPEX, ElCat required DWDM equipment with easy configuration and maintenance so it could be deployed and maintained by their own engineering team.

"The relationship between PacketLight and ElCat has turned into a true partnership where both parties strive for growth together."
Zakir Kenjebaev, Director of Development, ElCat

The Solution

PacketLight’s carrier grade DWDM OTN solution was a perfect fit for ElCat’s current requirements, and set a good foundation for future simple and gradual, expansion. The PL-1000TN 10G DWDM OTN Transponder, a 1U stackable chassis for long haul applications was deployed. This compact equipment saves rack space and consumes less than 100W per site. This is especially valuable for ElCat’s remote sites, which may rely on power generators.

The equipment’s simple installation and configuration allowed ElCat to deploy the 2,100 kilometers of network using their own engineers within two weeks.

Success

Deploying PacketLight’s DWDM network provided ElCat with the most modern and protected network in Kyrgyzstan and allowed ElCat to offer connectivity and high speed data services to their local and international customers. This transport network continues to grow and expand using PacketLight solutions.

It has become the most robust network in Kyrgyzstan, enabling ElCat to become one of the leading transit traffic providers in Central Asia serving their partners in Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and China.

Zakir Kenjebaev, Director of Development at ElCat: “The relationship between PacketLight and ElCat has turned into a true partnership where both parties strive for growth together. With PacketLight’s equipment, ElCat can expand its network and establish itself as a leading carrier in Kyrgyzstan and the Central Asia region”.
