Watch - 5 Steps to DWDM
Increasing bandwidth requirements and the need to comply with security regulations have challenged utility companies to build and update their optical WDM/OTN network backbone infrastructure or offer their optical network resources as a service to potential customers.
Utility companies must provide their customers with secure and uninterrupted service. Critical infrastructure such as electricity, transport, and water, require complex networks to support protection and control, ensuring reliability and safety for users, workers, and the equipment. PacketLight solutions enable utility companies to transmit mission-critical traffic in a resilient, secured and scalable network.
Utility companies are able to increase profitability and ROI by offering managed services to telecom companies, and selling wavelengths and capacity to carriers.

FIVE MUST-HAVES:
- Reliable
- Scalable
- Mix of Services
- Managed
- Long Haul Capabilities
Reliable
Utility networks place their fiber along the infrastructure (e.g. grid lines). PacketLight ensures there is no downtime by providing fiber monitoring on the fiber assets, which indicate and alert regarding any issue with the infrastructure on both operational and non-operational fiber.
In addition, all devices have power (AC/DC) and fan redundancies, and 1+1 fiber line protection with less than 50ms switch-over time, supporting different levels of protection.
Scalable
Utility companies can easily scale their network capacity without the need to replace existing infrastructure, by adding wavelengths, and scaling the number and type of services transported over the same fiber. This solution facilitates a cost-effective upgrade and provides the flexibility to use different vendor hardware seamlessly over the same infrastructure.
PacketLight solutions enable utility companies to increase their network value with highly integrated cost-effective 1U pay-as-you-grow backbone. The devices form a multi-chassis which can expand at any time to add more capacity, without link downtime.
Mix of Services
PacketLight solutions merge SONET/SDH and Ethernet services over the same OTN layer. The solutions multiplex multiple SONET/SDH and Ethernet services over the same fiber, in a low latency fiber optic network. Business continuity, disaster recovery, and billing systems backup solutions support a mix of Fibre Channel and Ethernet services for building high capacity data center interconnect (DCI), with embedded Layer-1 encryption FIPS 140-2 and Common Criteria EAL2 certified.
Managed
PacketLight offers remote management and monitoring of large scale networks using an embedded web-based GUI, any third party SNMP system, or PacketLight LightWatchTM EMS/NMS. This makes daily activities and service provisioning intuitive and time-saving, and enables close supervision and fault isolation.
Long Haul Capabilities
PacketLight offers carrier class muxponders and transponders for providing managed services with multi-rate and multi-protocol capabilities for long haul network applications, using 100G/200G/400G coherent DWDM/OTN uplinks. The products are designed in a 1U footprint with low power consumption, significantly reducing OPEX and CAPEX. They are simple to install, and enable fast network deployment. .
