DWDM/OTN for Broadcasters

PacketLight Corporate Video

Watch - 5 Steps to DWDM

PacketLight solutions answer the increasing demands for high-capacity video transport, driven by the rise in HD, 4K and 8K technologies, IP broadcast, low latency video on-demand programming, and streaming services.

DWDM/OTN for Broadcasters

The main challenge is effectively transporting multiple SDI native video and IP streams in real-time between media centers, broadcasting venues, processing sites, and satellite locations.

PacketLight’s optical fiber transport devices transport a mix of services over the same fiber, enabling broadcasters to utilize their fiber and DWDM/OTN infrastructure for both broadcasting and common client protocols such as data and storage - Ethernet and Fibre Channel.

The DWDM/OTN muxponder and transponder aggregated solutions reduce the number of fibers needed betwee sites, for native SDI video and IP data transport applications, cutting infrastructure costs and enabling broadcasters to add video services on top of their existing DWDM/OTN metro or long-haul backbone infrastructure.

FIVE MUST-HAVES

  • Flexibility
  • High Capacity
  • Native Video Support
  • Low Latency
  • Facility Protection

Flexibility

PacketLight’s muxponders transport a flexible mix of services over dark fiber, DWDM and CWDM optical networks. They aggregate a flexible mix of baseband video, IP data, and storage services into a common 100G OTU4 / 200G OTUC2 standard-based uplink. This maximizes capacity while reducing the number of required wavelengths, saving significant CAPEX and OPEX. Services include:

  • Baseband video - including UHD, 3G-SDI, HD-SDI, SD-SDI, DVB-ASI native video services
  • IP data transmission - including FE, GbE, 10GbE, 40GbE, 100GbE, 400GbE
  • Storage capabilities - including 1G/2G/4G/8G/10G/16G/32G FC

High Capacity

PacketLight muxponders aggregate a mix of multi-protocol/multi-rate storage and OTN services (10/25/40/100/400GbE, 8/16/32G Fibre Channel, OTU2/OTU2e/OTU3/OTU4 OTN) into a 200G/400G high capacity DWDM uplink. The 20G OTN ADM Muxponder aggregates up to 16 multi-protocol/multi-rate services of up to 10G (including native video UHD/HD/SD/ASI services) into 10G OTU2 uplinks, which are fed onto the 200G DWDM wavelengths as 10G OTU2 client services.

High Capacity Native and IP-based Video Transport

Native Video

PacketLight’s DWDM muxponder and transponder solutions support native, uncompressed video and data transport while ensuring high quality broadcast. The solutions support UHD/HD/SDSDI and ASI native video requirements including copper-based or optical interfaces, as well as different video rates. In addition, PacketLight solutions support transport stream over IP (TSoIP), whereby video is carried as an Ethernet 10G/40G/100G service.

Low Latency

In an industry where zero latency in real-time live transmissions is vital, PacketLight solutions deliver end-to-end data transparency at sub-microsecond latency, maintaining high transmission quality with no degradation of video and data signals.

Facility Protection

PacketLight optical transport solutions provide reliable, high-capacity networks with redundancy, in an industry where downtime is not an option. The systems support different levels of protection, including 1+1 facility protection using an optional integrated optical switch or OTN cross-connect. The units are designed with power and fan redundancies, further ensuring reliability.
