The amount of data accumulated today by users and enterprises is vast and growing. Storing and accessing data over longer distances has become more demanding, requiring higher data transport capacity. This has lead to migration of data centers to 40G switches and routers.

The majority of today’s data centers have storage infrastructure equipped with 10G and 40G switches. Increasing the distance in these networks is challenging especially for 40G, as 40G QSFP+ optics extends only up to 40 km and each 40G interface needs its own dedicated fiber between sites. This requires a DWDM/OTN solution that will efficiently connect multiple 40G links as well as longer distances between data centers.

40G transport solutions that boost fiber capacity and data reach to any distance

PacketLight solutions for 40G transport include 100G/200G DWDM/OTN muxponders, and bundeled 4x10G DWDM transponders. Both solutions are vendor-agnostic and can be integrated smoothly into any Layer-2 or Layer-3 network. In addition, the soltuions provide full throughput, ultra-low latency, and low power consumption, with optional transparent Layer-1 encryption.

40G Transport Solutions

PacketLight solutions for extending 40G reach:

  • Muxponder Solution - muxponding 40G over 100G/200G DWDM network up to 2,500 km, over dark fiber or OTN infrastructure.
  • Bundle Solution – transporting 40G over a bundle of 4x10G wavelengths, up to 120 km.

100G/200G OTN/DWDM Muxponder Solution

PacketLight’s 100G/200G solution, for metro and long haul, provides configurable muxponders that enable data centers to multiplex multiple 40G and 10Gb Ethernet interfaces over single coherent 200G DWDM wavelength with high fiber utilization.

The 100G/200G solution enables the transport of multiple Ethernet protocols through QSFP+ LR4/SR4/ER4 transceivers, extending the reach of 40Gb Ethernet up to 2,500 km, as seen in Figure 1.

The solution can connect to any existing third party DWDM or OTN infrastructure, and is spectrally efficient, as it carries 2-4x40G interfaces over a single wavelength.

PacketLight muxponders support Layer-1 AES-256 encryption that can be configured per 40G interface for securing the fiber optic link. In addition, the data is transported at full rate without reducing the data throughput.

All PacketLight’s products are low power consumption 1U chassis, achieving space and power limitations, while providing carrier grade capabilities of line protection and dual pluggable AC/DC power supplies and fan unit.

Bundle Solution

PacketLight’s unique multi-rate transponder enables to transport 40Gb Ethernet, supporting SR4, LR4 and ER4 interfaces. It provides eight transport ports, each with 10G SFP+ optical interface optics. In addition, it provides optional Layer-1 security for 40Gb Ethernet client by encrypting the 4x10G wavelengths it uses.

By bundling 4x10G wavelengths, the transponder connects directly to the 40G QSFP+ interface on the switches, reaching up to 120 km, providing a low latency, low cost solution, with full performance. This, without the added expense of upgrading the network and Layer-2/Layer-3 infrastructure to 100G, as seen in Figure 2.

The solution also supports transport of other multiple service types, including storage protocols 1G/2G/4G/8G/10G and 16G FC, video and SONET/SDH.
