Passive vs. Active Solutions

The concept years ago of building a dark fiber backbone infrastructure using WDM was considered a complex challenge and an expensive solution used only by carriers. Due to this complexity and high cost, many data centers, ISPs, financial institutions and other enterprise organizations compromised by implementing passive solutions, thus limiting their future growth and bounding them to an inferior technical solution for essential backbone infrastructure.

There are two main methods of building CWDM/DWDM backbone network. “Passive solution” which is built from passive filters and colored optics plugged into different equipment such as routers, switches and ADMs (Add Drop Multipelxor). In an “Active solution” CWDM/DWDM infrastructure is built from transponders and muxponders providing full optical demarcation point agnostic to the routers, switches and ADMs within the network.
