The amount of data accumulated today by users and companies has grown tremendously, while at the same time the requirements of storing and accessing this data is more demanding requiring faster and further delivery.
Majority of today’s data centers have the storage infrastructure and are equipped with 10G and 40G switches. The challenge becomes the distance extension. 40G QSFP+ optics only work to up to 10km distances leaving a gap for data centers that they have to overcome with at often times, an expensive solution.
PacketLight offers the 40G transport solutions that boost the data reach to any distance. These solutions are vendor agnostic and can be integrated smoothly to any Layer-2 or Layer-3 network. They provide full throughput, ultra-low latency, and low power consumption with an optional transparent Layer-1 encryption.
The two solutions offered by PacketLight for extending the reach of 40G are:
Bundle solution - transporting 40G over a bundle of 4x10G wavelengths to distance up to 120Km
100G Solution – muxponding 40G over 100G network to distance of up to 2,500Km DWDM, over dark fiber or OTN infrastructure
40G QSFP+ Extension using the Bundle Solution
PacketLight’s unique multi-rate transponder product, PL-1000TE provides the ability to transport 40G Eth supporting both SR4 and LR4 interfaces. PacketLight’s PL-1000TE provides eight (8) transport ports of 10G SFP+ optical interface optics. By bundling 4x10G transponders, the PL-1000TE connects directly to the 40G QSFP+ interface on the switches, thus providing a low latency, and low cost solution reaching up to 120Km distances with full performance while saving the expenses of upgrading your network and layer-2 layer-3 infrastructure to 100G.

In addition to the 40G ETH, the PL-1000TE supports transport of multiple other service types including the storage protocols 1G/2G/4G/8G/10G and 16G FC, Video and SONET/SDH.
A variation of the PL-1000TE, the PL-1000TE Crypto, provides an optional layer-1 encryption to 40G ETH client by encrypting the 4x 10G wavelengths it uses.
40G QSFP+ Extension using the 100G Solution
PacketLight’s 100G products provide configurable muxponders that enables data centers using their existing 100G OTU4 infrastructure for muxponding 10G and 40G services. As illustrated in Figure 2, PacketLight’s 100G products, PL-1000GM for metro networks, and PL-1000GT for Long Haul, allow transport of up to 2x40G Ethernet protocols through QSFP+ LR4/SR4 transceivers, thus extending the reach of 40G ETH up to 2,500km.

The PL-1000GT and PL-1000GM provide a spectral efficient solution since they carry 2x 40G interfaces over a single wavelength. Both the PL-1000GT and PL-1000GM can be connected to any existing third party OTN infrastructure.
